Sad Death
One of the very saddest of deaths that has yet occurred within the bounds of "M" county happened on a claim near Cleo last Saturday night [24-Mar-1894]. Last week John Flanigan, wife and seven year old child removed [moved?] from Anson, Sumner county, Kansas, out to their claim in the eastern part of this county and near Cleo, with bright hopes for the future and enjoying the best of health, yet today they are cold and still in death. Thursday and Friday of last week Mr. Flanigan, encouraged by the happiness of his wife and child, worked unceasingly in building a "dugout" and by Saturday evening the abode was completed and ready for occupancy and he and his happy family moved in feeling exaltant of the knowledge that at last their own roof afforded them shelter. But alas! death stole in during the night and robbed them of all earthly aspirations. During the dark hours of the night the ridge pole supporting the roof gave way precipitating the mountain of dirt and timber upon them as they slept and all were suffocated. The discovery was made on Sunday evening by the brothers of the dead man and wife, who had came up from their claims to spend the evening with them in their new home. Words have not the power to picture the anguish and horror depicted upon the young men's faces when the worst was known, that the husband, wife and child, all were slumbering the sleep of the dead. Help was summoned and the deceased family were quietly buried upon the claim which was so short a time their home.
