Billy Gene “Bill” Wood was born June 1, 1935 to Lloyd and Willie Stewart Wood in Wilson, Oklahoma and passed from this life on September 3, 2017 in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Bill was one of eight children and grew up on a farm southeast of Wilson and graduated from Wilson High School in 1955. After high school he entered the U. S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Orien for four years. He returned to Wilson, then moved to Cherokee in 1959 to work for Smith Construction. On February 27, 1960 he married ElDora McDaniel in Cherokee where they lived from that time on. June 1960 Bill went to work at Cherokee Publishing Company where he worked for fifty years.
He enjoyed horses and cattle and spent most of his free time helping friends with their cattle. Later he went into the cattle business with Ruth Vewter and still helped his friends every chance he had.
Bill was a 32 degree Mason through the Masonic Lodge in Cherokee. He was a man who was always kind to everyone and would help at any time. He will be missed by many.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Willie Wood; brothers, Frankie Wood, Coleman Wood; sisters, Norene Chambers, Hazel Copeland.
Those who survive are his wife, ElDora Wood of Cherokee; one sister, Pearline Jackson of Arlington, Texas; two brothers, Leo Wood of Ventura, California and Calvin Wood of Cyril, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Bill will be Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with family present 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
Memorials may be made to Cherokee Roundup Club through the funeral home.
