MILDRED IRENE WESSELS
The funeral for Mildred Irene Wessels, 94, of Cherokee, OK., will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Cherokee. The Revs. Ed Jones and Gail Edmison will officiate. Burial will be at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Cherokee, OK. The casket will be open at the funeral home today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family present 7-9 p.m. The casket will be open at the church before the service.
She was born July 19, 1911, near Driftwood, OK. to Clarence Lester and Hattie Engel Cleal and died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Cherokee Manor, Cherokee, OK.
She was a 1930 graduate of Driftwood High School and a 1933 graduate of Cherokee Masonic Hospital Nurses' Training. She worked as a nurse for local doctors at the Masonic Hospital and at area nursing homes. She also worked for W.P.A., giving shots to school children all over Alfalfa County. She was a member of First Christian Church and taught Sunday school. On July 27, 1937, she married Willie W. Wessels in Cherokee, OK.
Surviving are two sons, Darrell and Dwight Wessels, both of Cherokee, OK.; one daughter, Marilyn Leming of Ponca City, OK.; a brother, Leonard Cleal of Yukon, OK.; a sister, Ruth Rehn of Evansville, IN.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie; two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First Christian Church of Cherokee or Share Hospice of Alva, OK.
