Dennis L. Walker, M.D.
ENID - Dennis L. Walker, M.D., 59, met the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011. He was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Cherokee to Wayne and Lois Schanbacher Walker.
He attended Lambert School and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1969. He graduated from Northwestern State College in 1974 and Oklahoma University Medical School in 1978. After his two-year residency in family medicine, he opened his family practice clinic in Enid in 1981. He retired in 1995 due to failing health. He devoted most of his early years to patients in his medical practice. He delivered his first baby on Easter and many more over his years of practice.
He grew up on a farm south of Cherokee. He was active in 4-H, FFA and received the State Farmers degree. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting with his friends and family and following Oklahoma University sports.
He was a member of Prairie Valley Methodist Church, Garfield County Medical Association, Oklahoma Medical Association and American Association of Family Physicians.
Surviving are his mother, Lois Walker of Cherokee; brother, Charles Walker and wife Kaye of Stillwater; sisters, Nancy Allen of Cherokee and Deanna Wheeler and husband Elroy of Wichita, Kan.; nephews and nieces, along with many great friends, neighbors and caregivers.
He was preceded in death by his father and twin sisters, who died as infants.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today, Feb. 2, 2011, at Cherokee Friends Church. The Revs. Mary Irby and Gail Edmison officiating. Burial will follow in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Huntington Neurological Centre or Prairie Valley Methodist Church through Goodwin Funeral Home, 106 W. 2nd St., Cherokee, OK 73728.
