Funeral services for Jimmie Kinzie Simmons will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Chapel with Reverend Katie Hill, pastor, First United Methodist church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee Cemetery. Online condolences may be made to http://www.whartonfuneralchapel.com.

Jimmie Kinzie Simmons was born October 30, 1946, to Wanda B. Vandruff and Estol Ray Simmons at Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas. He passed away October 2, 2020, at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 2 days.

Jimmie was raised by his grandparents, Clarence and Winnie Vandruff in Furley, Kansas, until his mom remarried serviceman R.G. Watson in 1949 and the grandparents moved to Alva.

The family moved around many times, due to being a service family. In 1954, the family lived in Alaska where Jimmie attended primary school through the second grade until the family transferred again to Wisconsin. Jimmie attended his freshman and sophomore year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended his junior and senior years in Wichita, Kansas, where he graduated from East High in 1964.

Bob and Wanda moved back to Alva in 1968 and Jimmie followed soon after.

Jimmie worked at Sonic for Gary Adams for 15 years, then at NWOSU, under Dr. Joe Stuckley and Dr. White for three years, until he retired early.

Jimmie had a great love for the people of Alva and no matter where he had lived in his life, he claimed Alva as his home.

Jimmie is preceded in death by his parents, Wanda B. Vandruff and Estol Ray Simmons; his step-dad R.G. Watson; several aunts; uncles; a cousin and a great friend, Larry Thorne.

He is survived by his sister, Catherine A. Peterson; his best friend, Jeff Cahoj, a number of nieces and nephews; friends and loved ones in Alva, Oklahoma.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jimmie's memory to Alva Senior Citizens Center through Wharton Funeral Chapel.
