CHEROKEE — Funeral service for Lyle G. Schanbacher, 86, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at United Methodist Church, Cherokee, with Rev. Mary Irby officiating. Viewing will be 1:30-5:30 p.m. today with the family present from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Lyle G. Schanbacher was born Sept. 29, 1925, on the family farm northeast of Carmen to Edna Mae Wade Schanbacher and Murray Guy Schanbacher, the fourth of seven siblings. He passed from this life on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, to a Heavenly homecoming.
Lyle attended East Clay Elementary School, then Lambert High School, graduating in 1944.
Following graduation, he farmed with his parents under the Farm Exemption Act until his brother, Duane, returned from the war.
In 1945, Lyle entered the Army and trained at Fort Ord and Camp Roberts in California, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
On Dec. 8, 1946, Lyle married his Carmen sweetheart, Doris Harvey, at the home of her aunt and uncle in Alva. To their union of nearly 65 years, three children were born, Marlene, Dorlene and Rocky.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Doris; his three children, Marlene Buck and husband Jim of Cherokee, Dorlene Walker of Tulsa and Rocky Schanbacher and wife Michele of Cherokee; his grandchildren, Chris Parker and husband Shane of Cherokee, Angie Buck of Cherokee, Jamie Beisel and husband Joe of Duncan, Brandon and Lauren Walker of Tulsa, Justin, Landon and Katie Schanbacher of Cherokee; great-grandsons, Joel and Wyatt Parker; sister, Lois Walker of Cherokee; brother, Gene Schanbacher and wife Priscilla of Murray, Ky.; sister-in-law, Verna Ruth Schanbacher of Cherokee; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Hazel Means and husband Bob; brothers, Delbert Schanbacher and wife Glendola, Duane Schanbacher, Bobby Schanbacher; and brother-in-law, Wayne Walker.
Memorials may be given to Prairie Valley United Methodist Church, Alfalfa County, Cherokee EMS or Cherokee High School Track Fund through the funeral home.
