Jose Alberto "Bert" Salinas, Sr.
The funeral for Jose Alberto "Bert" Salinas Sr., 69, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cherokee First Baptist Church. The Rev. Tom Cooksey will officiate. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family will be at the home of Peppy and Brenda Salinas, 610 E. 8th in Cherokee.
He was born July 24, 1937, in Freer, Texas, to Jesus and Felomina Perez Salinas and died Friday, April 13, 2007, in Cherokee.
He attended school in Freer. He married Mary Rodriquez March 11, 1959. They made their home in Clovis, N.M., and in 1978 moved to Geary. In 1979, they moved to Byron, then to Cherokee in 1981. In 2004, he moved to Cherokee Manor.
He farmed and ranched. He served as a reserve police officer and interpreter in Clovis, N.M., and for the Geary and Cherokee police departments.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife Mary; six sons, Jesse of Lyons, Kan., Jose (Joe) and Jose (Peppy), both of Cherokee, John of Richmond, Va., Paul of Stillwater and Armondo Hernandez of Watonga; four daughters, Diane Rubio of Aurora, Colo., Norma Rose of Fredricksburg, Va., Linda Gammon of Bloomingdale, Ga., and Sarah Homfar of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Eric of Biloxi, Miss.; three sisters, Lupe Compos of Freers, Bertha Ortiz of Engleside, Texas, and Ester Renteria of Salinas, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Alfalfa County EMS.
