ENID - The graveside service for Gerald Gussie "Gus" Ream will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with Dr. Ron Hansen and Rev. Tom Cooksey officiating. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Memories may be shared with the family at www.lanmanmemori als.com. Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Gerald was born on a cold Feb. 28, 1927, in Ryan, Okla., to Marvin Otto Ream and Pearl Lee Ray Ream and passed from this life Sunday, May 2, 2010, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid.

Gerald lived most of his life in northwest Oklahoma, attending schools in Cherokee and Carmen. He was too young for military service at the start of WWII. Gerald quit school and worked in the California shipyards, building Liberty Ships. He then joined the Merchant Marines and served on one of them, the S.S. Benjamin Carpenter all over the South Pacific. Gerald had his 17th birthday in Australia. He came home and joined the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

On March 22, 1947, Gerald and Glenda Belcher were married. They raised three boys, Mark, Cole and Luke. Gerald always liked horses. He had many friends, loved to dance, fish, hunt and trade. He retired as a rural mail carrier in 1993 after 29 years.

While he was only 83 years old, he always said he had lived twice that long, good bye everyone. Gerald.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Glenda Ream, of Cherokee; their sons and wives, Mark and Wallecia Ream of Alva, Cole and Nelda Ream of Enid, Luke and Sue Ream of Cherokee; grandchildren, Ashlee Sneary and husband Steve of Alva, Clint Ream and wife Megan of Cherokee, Aaron Ream and wife Shanna of Cherokee, Zac Ream and wife Charleen of Alva, Sarah Ream of Houston, Allison Ream of Edmond, Erik Haworth of Tulsa and Jesse Ream of Enid; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Connor Sneary, Payton and Otto Trig Ream and Tyson Ream; stepgrandchildren, Brian and Melissa Zimmerman of North Carolina, Scott and Rachael Zimmerman of Wyoming, Amy, Todd, Joey and Katey Sue Doss of Enid and Mike Zimmerman of Alva; one brother, Harlan Ream of Bakersfield, Calif.

Those who preceded Gerald in death include his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to Cherokee First Christian Church CWF through the funeral home.
