Cherokee – Earl W. McDowell, 79, died Thursday morning in an Oklahoma City Hospital. He was born May 27, 1901, in Hillsboro, Kansas, and moved to Cherokee from Lahoma in 1909 when his father opened the Cherokee Creamery.
After his father's death in 1926, they continued the creamery as a family business with Earl and Amsa McDowell as owners. In 1964, they sold the wholesale business route to Beatrice Foods and the McDowell brothers retired.
McDowell and Olive West were married February 12, 1923, at Cherokee. Mrs. McDowell died February 21, this year.
McDowell was a member of the Cherokee Christian Church, the Men's Sunday School Class, the Order of Eastern Star, the Cherokee Rod and Gun Club, Senior Citizens Center and the Corinthian Lodge No. 307 of which he was past master and former secretary.
He is survived by a son, Ralph Lynn McDowell of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Aaron (Earlene) Farney, Cherokee; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ward (Ruby) Rocky, Cherokee, Mrs. Wallace (Anna) Hunt, Tucumcari, New Mexico. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services for McDowell will be at 2 PM Saturday in the Christian Church with the Rev. Eugene R. Spillman officiating. Burial will be in the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery, under the direction of the Goodwin Funeral Home of Cherokee.
Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Corinthian Lodge.
The family has suggested the Alfalfa County Hospital as a suitable Memorial for McDowell. Contributions may be made direct or through the funeral home.
