Deloris Ellen (Dotterer) Barrett was born December
12,1938 in Cherokee, OK, daughter of Joe and Elma (Harvey) Dotterer. She
passed away April 16, 2025 at her home with family by her side. Deloris was
raised in Cherokee with her five brothers, Billy Joe, Don, Delmer, Charlie and
Glen. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1957. While in high school
she worked at Smith Drug Store. After graduating, Deloris got a job with
Southwestern Bell telephone Company as a switchboard operator. As a short time
passed Deloris met the love of her life Jerry J. Barrett. The couple were
united in marriage July 31,1959 at the Cherokee Friends Church parsonage and
making their home in Cherokee. To their union, four children were born:
Steven, Keith, Lesley, and Kelly. Deloris and Jerry loved taking family trips
in the camper to the lake and various of other places and visiting family. She
loved helping with the kids school class parties and sporting events. When it
came to Saturday nights she and Jerry looked forward to spending the evening
at the VIP supper club in Alva with their many friends. They would take trips
to Las Vegas with friends and also enjoyed going to the local casinos in the
area.
Deloris had many hobbies throughout her life: embroidery, sewing, tennis, gardening, canning the produce from her garden and entering her sewing projects and canned goods in the county fair. She worked diligently on her puzzle books and could be found watching the Cowboy Channel to keep up with the local cowgirls and cowboys. Deloris was a member of the Cherokee Friends Church. She was a member of the Home Demonstration club The Domes ti cates for several years, tennis Club, Cub Scout Den Mother.
Deloris served as the bookkeeper for the family businesses while wearing many hats to manage the household and the four kids without skipping a beat. She so appreciated her mother for the loving help she provided, and that love and help was passed down to her to her children as well. Whenever Jerry had to travel for work to California and Kentucky she would travel to be with him when possible and enjoying her time in each place. Deloris was also known as the Cherokee Babysitter for numerous families in town, you could always rely on her to be there when she was needed. All the kids were special in her eyes but there was one young man that was extra special Brandon Stauffer and a young lady Alysse Swafford they were just like part of the family.
Before retiring she worked at the Cherokee Manor in the Dietary department for several years and finally retired full time to spend time with family and going to the casino with Jerry. Deloris loved watching the OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER and watching any western show with Jerry. Deloris’ life long best friends Judith Kildow and Rachel Mellott were always there when she needed them. Her most favorite times were attending school and sporting events of the grandkids and having her family all together. The main events while at her and Jerry’s house were playing basketball on the patio and having cookouts. Deloris deeply loved her family. We had a wonderful loving mother and grandmother.
Deloris is preceded in death by her husband Jerry of almost 66 years; her parents Joe and Elma Dotterer; brothers Billy Joe Dotterer, Don (Monk) Dotterer, Delmer Dotterer, Charlie and sister-in-law Janice Dotterer, And infant sister Ruth Ann Dotterer.
Deloris is survived by her children: Steven Barrett of Cherokee, Keith Barrett of Waukomis, Lesley and husband Dirk Bagenstos of Cherokee, Kelly and wife Jessica Barrett of Cherokee; brother Glen and wife Connie Dotterer of OKC, sister-in-law Velda Dotterer. Grandchildren: Jessica Barrett, Gabby Redinger, Kyle Clepper, Samantha and husband Scott Phillips, Sandra Barrett, Evan and wife Ragan Bagenstos, Avery Bagenstos, Skyler Barrett, Tyler Barrett, Savannah Breaker, Joshua Breaker, Caleb and wife Heather Rinehart, Chase Winn and Great grandchildren: Tesslyn, Tate, Marlin, Delta, Grayson, Kathleen, Samuel, and Benjamin as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In memory of Deloris the memorial is to the Cherokee High School Speech and Theater Department. Services will be we be April 22, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Friend’s Church Cherokee, OK with burial to follow at the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc.
