Carmen Cemetery


January 6, 1931 - April 29, 2020

Private graveside services will held at the Carmen City Cemetery under the direction of Wentworth Mortuary, LLC. For the health and safety of family and friends a memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be visitation Saturday 1-5pm, May 1, and Sunday 1-5pm, May 2, at Wentworth Mortuary.

Wilmina P. "Nina" Burkes, daughter of the late Knolt Eshmel and Alice Annabelle (Ring) Wiggins, was born January 6, 1931, near Cleo Springs, and passed away April 29, 2020, at her home at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 23 days.

Nina grew up in Enid and Cleo Springs, graduating from Cleo Springs High School. On October 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles Leroy Burkes at Buffalo, Oklahoma. They lived in Dacoma and later moved to Carmen where they raised their family. She was a member of the Carmen Christian Church. Nina served on the Alfalfa County Election Board and the Carmen Library Board. She was a published poet, enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing the piano, bowling, fishing and was a homemaker. When her children were older she took a job as Administrative Assistant at the Carmen Home until it closed.

Besides her parents Knolt and Belle Wiggins, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; and great granddaughter, Freya Burke.

Nina is survived by her children, Terry Burkes of Carmen, Johnny Burkes of Carmen, Vicki Burke of Enid, Kim Olson and husband, Gary, of Carmen, Jackie Garcia and husband, Eddie, of Enid, and Shawn Burkes and wife, Lisa, of Oxford, Kansas; her brother, Wayne Wiggins of Ponca City; her sister, Elma Riggs of Lavern; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the mortuary to the Carmen Christian Church or the After 55 Club.

A Memorial Service for Nina Burkes, will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Carmen Christian Church with Pastor Kirk Board officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Wentworth Mortuary, LLC of Carmen.

Nina Wiggins Burkes was born January 6, 1931, near Cleo Springs to the late Knolt and Belle Wiggins. She passed away April 29, 2020, at her home at the age of 89 years.

Nina grew up in Enid and Cleo Springs, graduating from Cleo Springs High School. On October 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles Burkes. To this union six children were born: Terry, Johnny, Vicki, Kim, Jackie, and Shawn.

Nina worked for many years at the Carmen Nursing Home. After her retirement, she served on the Alfalfa County Election Board, the Carmen After 55 Board, and the Carmen Library Board. She was a published poet, enjoyed traveling, gardening in her flower beds, playing the piano, bowling, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren: Trenton Burke and wife, Sajdah, Ashlee Ryal and husband, Travis, Andrea Burkes McDonald and husband, Josh, Austin Burkes and wife, Tyler, Landon Olson and wife, Ana, Dane Olson and wife, Kristen, Ian Olson, Baye Burkes and wife, Mollie, Gage Burkes, Journee, Bryson, and Jordan Rolfe.
