Funeral service for Don Talley, 85, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Lanman Funeral Home Inc. Chapel in Kiowa, Kan., with burial in Byron-Amorita Cemetery. Visitation 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday with family present from 5-7 p.m. Arrangments by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Kiowa, Kan. Memories may be shared at www.lanmanmemorial.com.

Funeral service for Donald L. Talley, 85, will be Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Lanman Funeral Home in Kiowa, Kansas with Phillip Harris officiating. Burial following at Byron-Amorita Cemetery.

Born in Alva, Oklahoma on August 1, 1927 to Paul and Alvina (Maltbie) Talley, he died peacefully December 25, 2012 at Kiowa District Hospital.

Don grew up on a farm northwest of Amorita graduating from Amorita High School in 1945. After graduating from Northwestern State College in Alva, he served in the Army Counter Intelligence Corp, where he earned the Korean Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He married Carol Melton on August 16, 1953 in Alva. For several years he enjoyed teaching Industrial Arts, Biology, and Driver's Ed first at Hazelton High School, then at Burlington High School. He mentored and was looked up to by many students. Later, he became a full time farmer and rancher, having a deep appreciation for the land and the seasons. As a veteran of the Armed Forces, he was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He served many years in the Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. He served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Burlington Co-op and was the Superintendent at the Amorita Community Church for many years. Don was a loving husband, devoted father and grandpa who particularly enjoyed being involved in many creative projects with his grandsons. He was looking forward to celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary with Carol in August of 2013.

Don was preceeded in death by parents; brother, Ray; and cousin, Theron Rucker.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Dr. Michael Talley; daughter, Barbara Talley Duerksen; five grandchildren, and cousin, Iva Gates.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Byron-Amorita Fire department or Byron-Amorita Cemetery and given through Lanman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Friday, December 28, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00.
