ENID, Okla. — Funeral service for Darrell D. Hankey, of Amorita, Okla., will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Riverside Church of Christ in Burlington, Okla. Ray Hull of Waynoka and Jeffrey Keele of Burlington will officiate. Burial will be in Byron-Amorita Cemetery under the direction of the Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. Remembrances may be shared at www.lan manmemorials.com.

Darrell was born Aug. 9, 1932, and departed this life to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 17, 2013.

He was born and raised on the family farm, northeast of Amorita, to Floyd and Bertha Alexander Hankey.

Darrell attended school in Amorita, graduating in 1950.

On Nov. 14, 1953, he married Verla Smith at her parents’ home, northeast of Amorita. They were united in marriage by Minister Hartsell Johnson.

In 1953, Darrell was drafted into the service and left for the Army on Dec. 1, 1953, which was Verla’s birthday.

In May 1954, after high school graduation, she joined Darrell in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they spent their next year of marriage.

In August 1955, when Rick was six weeks old, they returned from Alaska to the Amorita area to help with her dad’s farming operation.

In August 1957, shortly after Darrell was dismissed from the army, Dale was born in Cherokee, Okla.

Darrell lived and farmed northeast of Amorita until his retirement. In November 2011, he decided to reside at the Kiowa District Manor in Kiowa, Kan. Darrell enjoyed his time at the manor and was a wonderful friend to all the residents and staff.

Darrell was a devoted farmer and loved the outdoors. He always had a kind and compassionate word for everyone and was always ready to tell the good news of Jesus, whether through teaching Bible classes or personal bible study. He was a member of Amorita Church of Christ and the Burlington Church of Christ. He served on the Byron-Amorita Cemetery Board, the USDA Community ASC Committee and was a Burlington FFA honorary chapter member.

He is survived by two sons, Rick Hankey and wife Beverly of Amorita, Okla., and Dale Hankey and wife Patty of Burlington, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Lindsey Callison and husband Kyle of Byron, Okla., Seth Hankey of Amorita, Okla., and Trevor Hankey of Burlington, Okla. He is also survived by two sisters, Rowena Grigg and Janet McCafferty; and a host of friends and family.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, Verla Hankey; his brother, Ray Dean Hankey; and his parents.

Memorials may be made to Lariat Creek Christian Camp, c/o Lanman Funeral Home, 1305 S. Grand, Cherokee, and Oklahoma 73728.

AMORITA — Funeral service for Verla Mae Hankey, of Amorita, will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2011, at Riverside Church of Christ, Burlington, Okla. Ray Hull of Waynoka and Jeffrey Keele of Burlington will officiate. Burial will be in Byron-Amorita Cemetery under the direction of the Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. today.

Verla was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Anthony, Kan., to Verne Ray and Deveta Mae Ford-Smith and departed this life to be with her Lord Thursday, March 10, 2011. She fought long and hard to overcome her illness and last September decided to reside at Kiowa District Manor in Kiowa, Kan.

Verla's childhood was spent on the farm between Byron and Amorita. She attended school at Amorita, graduating in 1954.

Verla was passionate about telling others the good news of Jesus, whether through teaching children's classes, personal Bible study or missionary work. She was a member of Amorita Church of Christ and Burlington Church of Christ, where she spent her life teaching and creating children's Bible class material and real-life, child-size visuals, which kept the attention of every child she taught. She was known to have taught continually for 15 or so years at a time without missing a Sunday or midweek teaching opportunity.

Verla enjoyed the outdoors and spent her life farming beside her husband, taking meals to the field and helping plow the fields. She also enjoyed drawing and painting and was an accomplished artist. She taught art classes in Cherokee and Amorita for many years. Verla enjoyed traveling and felt fortunate to have visited three continents and six countries, including the Holy Lands, which was a lifetime dream of hers.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell of the home; her children, Rick and wife Beverly of Amorita and Dale and wife Patty of Burlington; grandchildren,Trevor, Lindsey and Seth Hankey; brother, Ray Smith and wife Imogene of Byron; and a host of many other family and friends.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to Lariat Creek Christian Camp, c/o Lanman Funeral Home, 1305 S. Grand, Cherokee, OK 73728.
