Betty Ellen Boyle, 80, of Byron, Oklahoma, departed this life at her home in Byron with family by her side, on June 30, 2018.

She was born August 4, 1937, four miles east of Byron on a farm, the fourth of six children born to the late Bill and Esther Cox Puffinbarger.

Betty grew up northeast of Amorita and attended the Byron and Amorita Schools, graduating from Amorita High School in 1956. She loved pitching fast-pitch softball and playing basketball. She was on the Amorita basketball team that won state in 1956.

She married Leon Boyle on September 7, 1960, and they lived in the Wakita area. She attended Hutchinson Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1974. On August 1, 1982, she graduated from Saint Mary of the Plains College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. During her thirty year nursing career, she was Director of Nursing at numerous hospitals and worked as the Director of Quality Assurance Utilization Review, retiring in 2004.

She was an honorary member of the American Cancer Society and the National Quality Assurance Society. She enjoyed spending her time caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as watching NBA basketball.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Boyle of Byron; her daughters, Debra Tucker and Billie Boyle of Enid; four grandsons, Ty Smith and wife, Jodi of Amorita, Jace Smith and wife, Rachael of Byron, Trae Smith and wife, Michelle of Byron and Chantz Tucker of Alva; eight great-grandchildren, Dakota, Samantha, Cade, Cole, Emma, Hayle, Hana and Hope Smith; two sisters, Mary McPherson and husband, Larry of Newton, Kansas, and Martha Bowers and husband, Dwight of Bakersfield, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arthur Dale and Jerry Puffinbarger; one sister, JoAnn Coday; and Leon's parents, Gene and Honey Boyle.

Graveside service for Betty is 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Byron-Amorita Cemetery. Viewing is 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2018, with family present 5-7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Byron-Amorita Fire Department or charity of your choice, through Lanman Funeral Home Inc. 1305 South Grand, Cherokee, Oklahoma 73728. A gathering will be held following the graveside service, at the Byron-Amorita Fire Station.
