William Allen Passes Beyond at the Age of 84 Years
Was Born in Ireland, Early Settler in Indiana and Pioneer in Kansas and Oklahoma
William Allen was born in County Cannaught, Ireland, May 16, 1837, and died May 21, 1921, aged 84 years and 5 days.
He came to America with his parents when about three years old, and grew to manhood in Franklin County, Indiana. He moved from there to Madison County, Indiana, where he was married to Rebecca J. Montgomery. 13 children were born to this union, one of whom, with the mother, preceded him to the better world.
Of the living children all reside in Alfalfa and Major Counties, Oklahoma, except Charles E. of Haskew, Oklahoma, Mrs. Bertha Parsons, of Alden, Kansas, and Paul V., of Dove Creek, Colorado. Those living here are: Emery W., James R., Leora D., Walter H., William N., Andrew T., Archibald C., Mrs. Amy R. Brockway and Mrs. Mary Anthony.
The family came to Harper County Kansas in 1882, where they resided until the opening of the Cherokee Strip when they again moved, Mr. Allen filing on the land just west of Aline that has been his home ever since.
He was essentially a pioneer, having assisted in the settlement and development of two new countries, and was possessed of the rugged nature of which pioneers are made, and always made his influence felt on the side of civic righteousness and clean living.
He was a great reader, and one of his delights was the reading of the Bible, which he had read through a number of times. He was converted some years ago, while living in Kansas, but was not a member of any church. He often expressed faith in the power and saving grace of the Lord, and as the end drew near he often expressed the wish that his sufferings might end, and that he might be permitted to pass on and meet loved ones on the other side. A faithful husband, a loving indulgent father, a true friend and a kind neighbor were embodied in him, and we shall not envy him his rest, nor sorrow.
