Bob Lee West was born on the family farm in Stilwell, Oklahoma on January 4, 1926 to Augustus West and Buena (McCaleb) West, (both deceased). He left this world peacefully on November 7th, 2015 surrounded by his beloved family.

Bob was one of five children. The oldest brother was Welford and wife Geneva (both deceased); oldest sister Datha Mullins (deceased); younger brother Curtis West (deceased).

He is survived by Curtis' wife Wanda of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and youngest sister Amy Patterson and husband Darrell of Edmond, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his wife of 65 years, Jewell, and their children, including David West and his wife Kathy of Stilwell; daughter Judy Young and husband John of Pryor, Oklahoma.

Bob's grandchildren are: Michael West and wife Ashley of Chandler, Arizona; Rebecca Taylor and husband Joe of Stilwell; Jonathan West and wife Christy of Tahlequah; Mark West and wife Stephanie of Stilwell; and Connor Young of Pryor.

Bob's great-grandchildren are: Emily Taylor, Audrey Taylor, Abigail Taylor, Jeremiah Taylor; Joshua Taylor, Esther Taylor, Kate West, Sophie West, Jason West, Olivia West, Madeline West and Gavin West. What a blessed heritage!

Bob attended all twelve years in the Stilwell School system, graduating salutatorian of the class of 1944. He worked on the family farm, which was established by his grandfather Sam West in 1918. Bob's love of the land and cattle served him well as they rounded up cows each Fall during a time when it was open range. He would reminisce about driving the herds to the local train station and loading them onto the train to sell. He had one of the first hay balers in Stilwell and would custom bale hay for other farmers. Hay season was his favorite time of the year! Even in his later years when he couldn't feed cows and cut hay, he enjoyed talking about the process. He had his John Deere 1950's vintage 'Johnny Popper' tractor refurbished as a reminder and keepsake to the family of a time that was very important to him.

In 1948, he met Jewell McCully and they were married on February 11, 1950 at the Stilwell First Baptist Church parsonage. They have been members of the Stilwell First Baptist Church since the 1950's, serving in different capacities. Bob was very active in the selling of bonds to build the new church on Hickory Street. He and Jewell raised their children to love God and others.

Bob loved raising cattle, but decided he needed to further his education and received his Industrial Arts degree from Northeastern State University in 1960. He taught two years at Cave Springs School in Stilwell, then became a social worker for the Department of Human Services. He traveled all over Adair County for DHS helping many people. Bob retired from DHS in 1985. After retirement, Bob continued to help his family and anyone in need. Even in his later years, despite his disability, he never missed an opportunity to think of others.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services at 1 pm on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, Stilwell, OK. Final resting place will be Stilwell City Cemetery. Roberts/Reed-Culver Funeral Home - Stilwell, OK

What a blessed heritage!

Jewell (McCully) West was from a large family of nine. Because of her mother’s serious illness, Jewell learned to take care of family at an early age. In 1948, she met Bob Lee West and they were married on February 11, 1950 at the Stilwell First Baptist parsonage. She used her homemaking skills to help around their farm.

She made and sold butter, canned vegetables from their garden, made jellies and preserves, and raised chickens. Her cooking skills were well known and enjoyed by the farmers she fed during the threshing season. While keeping her household running, she always found time to visit with neighbors and to  visit church shut-ins.

When her youngest child started school, Jewell decided to get a teaching degree at NSU. She graduated in 1971 and started her teaching career at Zion Elementary School in Stilwell. Although she taught grades three and five, the majority of her career was spent teaching first grade. In 1985, she earned her Master of Education degree from NSU. She enjoyed working with small children and teaching them to read. She has many fond memories of her teaching career.

She retired from teaching in May 1992. Her hobbies included going to estate sales, collecting dishes, shopping for shoes and cooking family dinners.

Jewell and Bob moved to Go Ye Village in Tahlequah in May of 2014. Their life was extended because of the excellent atmosphere Go Ye Village provided them. Jewell made many friendships and often mentioned how much she enjoyed being there.

Funeral services to be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at First Baptist Church, Stilwell, with Bro. Joe Taylor and Bro. Paul Tavener officiating.

Interment followed at Stilwell City Cemetery, Stilwell, under the direction of Roberts/Reed-Culver Funeral Home, Stilwell
