Pete Pawhatten Simmons, son of P.H. Simmons and Mary Ruth (Webb) Simmons, was born on August 3, 1928 in Muskogee, Oklahoma and departed this life on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Stilwell, Oklahoma at 89 years of age.
He moved to Sanders community around the age of 15. Pete attended Stilwell High School through 9th grade. As a young man, Pete worked on the farm of beef cattle, dairy cattle and crops, as well as around the community. In that time, young men hired out for $1 a day. He had a team and wagon, so he was able to hire out for $3 a day. Pete went to broom corn harvest through some summers. Pete worked some construction, then later raised beef cattle, chickens and turkeys. He was awarded “farm family of the year” once and “turkey grower of the year” a few times. In all, he raised chickens and turkeys for 31 years.
Pete served on the school board at Wauhillau, then later at Maryetta.
He was a member of the Sanders Baptist Church and was always very active as long as he was able. One of his favorite jobs was leading singing.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents: P.H. and Ruth Simmons, wife: Alice Faye (Kester) Simmons and grandson: Marty Don Simmons.
He is survived by a loving family that includes his children: Butch Simmons of Stilwell, Sue Stevens and husband Terry of Stilwell, Lynn Simmons of Muskogee, siblings: Jerry Simmons and wife Pearl of Tahlequah, Floyd Simmons of Stilwell, Elsie Parker and husband Jim of Stilwell, grandchildren: Wendy Fusselman and husband Scott of Gravette, Ark., Stephanie Kennedy and husband Billy of Mannford, Dustin
Stevens of Stilwell, Ty Simmons of Tulsa, Josh Simmons of Stilwell, great-grandchildren Nichole Simmons of Stilwell, Keaton Simmons of Mannford, Taylor Simmons of Stilwell, Will Fusselman and Luke Fusselman of Gravette, Ruger Simmons of Mannford.
Pete also leaves behind many other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 26, 2018 at Roberts/Reed- Culver Chapel, Stilwell, with Bro. Herman Jones and Bro. Audie Vaughan officiating.
Interment followed at Stilwell City Cemetery.
