Sarah Phyllis Hendrix
Stilwell Cemetery
Sarah Phyllis Hendrix, daughter of Wiley and Martha (Mattie) (Batchelor) Brown, was born September 19, 1911 in Muldrow, Oklahoma. She departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the age of 102 years.
She was married to Joseph Earl Hendrix on January 5, 1935 in Stilwell, Oklahoma. This union was blessed with one daughter, Karyn Bynum. Phyllis and Earl lived in Stilwell where they owned and operated Stilwell Used Cars. She served as bookkeeper for the business. Her door was always open to family and friends, who fondly remember spending time in her warm and loving home. After her husband’s death, she worked at Walmart until retirement.
She gave her heart to the Lord at an early age and has been a member of the Central Baptist Church of Stilwell, Oklahoma since 1936. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, was assistant treasurer and a dedicated Christian, who rarely missed a service as her health allowed. She was a tower of strength for her family and friends and will be missed by all.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Mattie Brown, her husband, Joseph Earl Hendrix, seven brothers: Thomas, George, Truman, Lem, John, Ervin and Noah Brown and two sisters: Flossie Omo and Laura Holiman.
She is survived by her daughter, Karyn Bynum and husband Phillip of Stilwell, OK, two granddaughters: Andrea Rose of Fayetteville, AR and Alicia Bynum of Stillwater, OK, one great granddaughter, Berkley Bynum, also of Stillwater, OK, one brother, James Wiley (Buddy) Brown of Pocola, OK, many nieces, nephews and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ.
Funeral services were held at 1 pm on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Roberts/Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Kevin Webster and Rev. Larry Swafford officiating. Interment followed at Stilwell City Cemetery.
