Charles L. Petree was born on June 2, 1929 in Stilwell, Oklahoma to John Franklin and Mary Francis Hooper Petree and he grew up in the Stilwell community.

In 1945, he joined the Merchant Marines and served his country until his discharge. Chuck enjoyed taking his dogs out and coon hunting and every year he looked forward to loading his mule Smokey up and heading to Colorado to see if he could get the Big One. When he wasnt hunting, he could be found on the lake trying to catch the Big One and sometimes the only Big One was the story he was telling.
