James “Friend” Sawney was the fourth of 10 children born to Emmett Sr. and Lucy (Shell) Sawney. Born on May 7, 1953 and went to be with our Lord on August 14, 2003 at the age of 50 years, three months and seven days.

James enjoyed target practicing with his guns, fishing, expanding on his garden and going for long road adventures with his wife Rhonda and their little companion “Girlie.”

He worked at Greenleaf Nursery for 13 years, where he could work outdoors with his brother and friends. He served four years in the United States Air Force with rank of E4. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is preceded in death by his father, Emmett Sawney Sr. He is survived by a loving family that includes his wife of 16 years, Rhonda and little companion “Girlie” of the home in Stilwell, Okla.; his mother Lucy Sawney of Stilwell, Okla.; four brothers, Emmett Sawney Jr. and wife Debbie of Tahlequah, Okla., Kenneth Sawney of Caney Ridge, Okla., Pete Sawney and wife Shannon of Farmington, Ark., Onelo Sawney and wife Marilyn of Siloam Springs, Ark.; five sisters, Melvina Moten and Bryan Bowin of Tahlequah, Okla., Eva Barr and husband Charley of Tahlequah, Okla., Viola Poor and husband Mike of Stilwell, Okla., Glenda Watkins of Stilwell, Okla., Betty Sue Kinniston of Grand Rapids, Mich.; seven nephews; five great-nephews; 10 nieces; one great-niece and many other relatives and friends.

He will be missed by many and remembered by all who loved him. Funeral services were held Monday, August 18, 2003 at 1 p.m. in the Salem Baptist Church with Bro. Lawrence Eagle and Bro. Todd Dowty officiating. Interment followed in the Salem Cemetery under the direction of Roberts-Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
