May 26, 1916 - April 17, 2006John Clark Coombes was born on May 26, 1916 to Charles and Ida Coombes. He departed this life to be with our Lord and loved ones awaiting him on April 17, 2006, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 21 days in the Stilwell Memorial Hospital, Stilwell, Oklahoma.John met and married Mary Mae Fourkiller on April 7, 1956. He was a loving husband and father to Newman Lee Briggs. John and Mary lived many years in Wichita, Kansas where he was employed with the Boeing Co. and she worked as a seamstress, before settling and making their home in the Piney community in the early 1970’s.John loved the outdoors and enjoyed picnics in the park, fishing, family dinners and telling stories of his youth. Those who knew him growing up in the Peavine community knew him as "Red". John was a very loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be dearly missed by all of his loved ones.John proudly served his country in the 7th Infantry Company B in WWII. He received many honors and medals during his tours of duty in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe which included him combat infantry badge and marksmanship badge. Also the American theater Campaign medal, the Bame Campaign medal with five bronze stars, the good conduct medal and the WWII Victory medal.He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ida Coombes; his wife Mary Coombes; One son: Newman Briggs; one grandson-in-law: Dennis Wilson; three brothers: Tom Coombes, Ellis Coombes and Sherman Coombes; and six sisters: Iva Hummingbird, Nora Robinson, Ruth Coombes, Alta Anerson, Minnie Robison and Mary Swepston.He is survived by two granddaughters: Laura Wilson and Lisa Doyle both of Stilwell; five great grandchildren: Amanda Wilson, Jennifer Doyle, Amber Wilson, Kimberly Doyle and Brandon Doyle; and one great-great granddaughter: Keira Layne Wilson. A host of loving nieces, nephews, friend and other relatives also survive him.Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Roberts/Reed - Culver Funeral Chapel with Bro. Darrell Lacie and Rev. David L. Young officiating.
Interment followed in the direction of Roberts/Reed - Culver Funeral Home.
