Nadine Langston HAMPTON
April 4, 1912-October 31, 2007
Nadine Langston Hampton was born April 4, 1912, in Olive, Oklahoma. She spent her early school years at Olive, but graduated from Drumright High School. Following graduation, she worked in local businesses until marrying Wid Hampton and moving to Chewey, Oklahoma. Nadine and Wid, along with their son, Gordon, operated a family farm and ran the community's general store for several years.
Following Wid's death, Nadine continued to live on the farm for many years while driving into Westville to work. Nadine loved to work, laugh, shop and be around people. She always made friends and enjoyed working and visiting with people. Nadine's work with the Cookson Hills Community Action Headstart Program turned out to be her most fulfilling job. For almost 30 years, she looked after the smallest children in the county by making sure they had their immunizations, taking them to the doctor, and to the dentist. She held them on her lap and was grandma to those in need.
Following her retirement at the age of 89, she moved to Tulsa to be closer to Gordon. But, as always, she could not just sit at home. Nadine began volunteering at the Cancer Centers of America and quickly was named Volunteer of the Year. Nadine was always ready to go to work, go traveling or go shopping. She made trips to Alaska, Florida, California, Minnesota, Washington D.C. and of course, Texas and all points in between. She found all the good shopping places at each stop and always brought souvenirs to everyone. Even though she broke her hip less than 2 months prior to the wedding, she made the trip to Austin to see grandson, Jeff, married in 2004. She found a new reason for shopping and living, with the birth of her great granddaugher, Mavis Jane. She delighted in finding the custest outfits for her and watching her play. We are grateful that Nadine got to enjoy watching her grow.
Nadine passed peacefully on October 31, 2007, while residing at Saint Simeon's Health Care Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Wid, her parents, one sister; Winfrey Clements and one brother; Harry Langston.
She is survived by her son, Gordon Hampton, of Tulsa, grandson, Jeff Hampton and wife, Cara, and great granddaugher, Mavis Jane, of Austin, Texas. Also cherishing her memory are her exteded family.
Graveside services were held Saturday, November 3, 2007 at New Hope Cemetery in Chance, Oklahoma with Rev. Gary Hampton officiating.
Burial was under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.
