Robert Lee Cornsilk, 73, of Stilwell, OK, passed away at home on August 19, 2011. Robert was born June 30, 1938 at home in Adair County, OK, to Jess and Sissie Cornsilk.
Family and friends will always remember Robert as a kind man, a great storyteller with a great sense of humor and terrific smile, and a man who loved giving rides on his wheelchair. He enjoyed music, fishing, and the outdoors, but most of all, he loved his family. Robert was also very proud of his Cherokee heritage.
Robert attended Sequoyah Indian School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960.
Following a diving accident in 1963, he attended Okmulgee Rehabilitation Center and then Okmulgee Technical School.
From 1968-1980 he enjoyed working as a dispatcher for the Stilwell Police Department.
For 31 years Robert was actively involved with the Paralyzed Veterans of America, serving stints as Director of the National organization and President of the Mid-America Chapter.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Sissie Cornsilk, brother Charley, nephew Jack, and sister Christine Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kay Cornsilk; sons Robert Jr. and wife Kim Cornsilk and Charles Cornsilk, all of Orange, TX; daughters Sheri and husband Mike Byer and Michelle and husband Michael Stacy of Edmond, OK; sister Jessie and husband Spencer (Jim) Craig of Stilwell; brother John and wife Tinsey of Tahlequah; brother Danny of Tahlequah; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and many precious friends too numerous to list.
Being a quadriplegic throughout his adult life presented many challenges and struggles, but whenever anyone asked him "How are you?", Robert would always respond with great humor, "I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in."
Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 24, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Hart Funeral Home in Stilwell, with Glenn Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Fairfield Cemetery in Stilwell.
