Louis Edward "PeeWee" McGee

Louis Edward “PeeWee” McGee was born November 3, 1950, in Neodesha, Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Edward “Fibber” McGee of Stilwell. His mother was the former Jewell Cagle. Louis died March 16, 2019, in Tulsa after a brief illness.
He was raised in Baron, but traveled to all 48 states in the continental US during his childhood with his father working on pipelines. He attended Baron School until the 8th grade and then attended Westville High School until his senior year when he transferred to Stilwell High School to fulfill a lifetime goal to play football for head coach Joe White and his brother, Jim McGee. While at Stilwell, Louis played offensive and defensive tackle, He received District 7A All- Conference Tackle as well as Outstanding Offensive Lineman honors. Louis was selected by the Tulsa World and The Daily Oklahoman for the North’s 1967 All-State squad and participated in the 31st annual Shriners Oil Bowl Classic. He was highly recruited by all the area’s major colleges. He chose the University of Tulsa after a visit from legendary head coach and athletic director Glenn Dobbs, along with assistant coach, Francis Wheeler, who offered him a full four year scholarship. McGee’s final high school recognition came in the year 2000 when he was selected to the Muskogee Phoenix All-Century Football team. The most memorable moment of his collegiate career came in 1971 when the Golden Hurricane defeated the seventh ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. Louis played a major role in the victory and enjoyed reliving the offensive play that led to the winning touchdown. While at the University of Tulsa, Louis met the love of his life, Melinda Joyce Cooper. He wooed her with his charming smile, bulging muscles and fast Super Bee. They were married May 30, 1970, in Freeport, Texas. After graduating from the University of Tulsa with a B.S. in Special Education, Louis began coaching while also playing semi-pro football in Houston and became a free agent for the Houston Oilers where he swore to his last day that they cut the wrong McGee. His teaching and coaching career included Hartman Junior High in Houston, Clear Lake Intermediate School in Clear Lake, Texas, Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Jay High School in Jay and in 1978, returned to Stilwell High School as head track coach and assistant football coach before becoming Head Football Coach and Athletic Director in 1980. He hung up his coaching hat for full-time teaching and administration prior to retiring from Oklahoma. Louis then spent eight years as a classroom teacher and administrator with the Prairie Grove School District in Prairie Grove, Ark. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was proud of his Cherokee heritage and instilled that same pride in his children. He and Melinda lived in the Piney Community near Stilwell for over 30 years. They enjoyed traveling and “picking” antiques and collectibles together.He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, and two daughters: Jeana McGee (Junior Maxey) of Stilwell, and Dr. Celesta White (Dr. Bryan White) of Katy, Texas; fourgrandchildren: Aarontasia McGee of Stilwell, Jalisa Dundy of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Kaeli and Avery White of Katy, Texas; two great-grandchildren: Ariana and August; and his half brother Jim McGee and wife Betty of Stilwell. Several nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive him.
Interment will follow at Downing Cemetery under the care and direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
