Beryl Duer, 102 year old resident of Prairie Village, Kansas and former Woodward resident, died Sunday, February 8, 2015 in Kansas. Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday February 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 in the Billings Funeral Home. The family will not be present.
Beryl Orvilla Wolfe Duer was born February 12, 1912 in Chattanooga, Oklahoma; Beryl was the daughter of Orville Cullen and Ada Lavada (Cooper) Wolfe. After graduating from Chattanooga High School, she entered nurses training in Lawton, Oklahoma. She then transferred to and completed her training at Wesley Hospital in Oklahoma City. It was there that she met Joe L. Duer, and they were married in Sulphur, Oklahoma on July 22, 1933. Doc, as she always called him, preceded her in death on August 25, 1995.
Beryl assisted Doc in his medical practice until the birth of their first child, Wesley Joe Duer, who preceded her in death. She was the firm homemaker and parent during World War II, while her husband served in the Navy. She served as a volunteer Red Cross trainer in Woodward. In the bleak hours following the 1947 Woodward tornado, she gave of her nursing talents to aid the hurt and dying. She also served as a Scout leader, and was on the Band Bus for many band festival trips. She could always be counted on to help chaperone a Peppers trip to an out-of-town ball game.
Playing bridge provided many years of enjoyment. Beryl is remembered for her handmade quilts and liking to make “something out of nothing.” Mrs. Duer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Woodward, and the Shawnee Mission Chapter DAR, Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
Survivors include daughter Carol D. Cochran and her husband Bruce of Prairie Village, Kansas; Barbara Duer, daughter-in-law; five grandchildren, Dana Kay Vanderwilt, Derrick Joe Duer, David Hunter Duer, Holly B. Cochran, Wesley Paul Cochran; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, many nieces and nephews and two great, great granddaughters.
