Hugh Robert Hughes, a long time Cushing Business and Civic Leader, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 22, 2006 in Dallas, at the age of 86 years.

The son of the late Thomas J. and Clara Hughes, Hugh was born on September 25, 1919 in Cushing and was reared and educated here, graduating from Cushing High School. He attended New Mexico Military Institute, Washington and Lee University and the University of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.

He was united in marriage to Audrey Caroline Erickson on October 19, 1941 in Cushing and to this union three children, Elizabeth, Robert and Christine were born. Caroline preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1993.

He served his country as a member of the Army 112th Cavalry Unit in the Philippines during World War II.

Hugh was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving for many years as an Elder and had also held the office of Church Treasurer. Hugh was a member of the Cushing Masonic Blue Lodge and the Cushing Country Club. For many years had served on the Board for the Bank of Cushing and the Cushing Country Club.

He owned and operated the Cimarron Concrete Products Company and later was associated with the Hughes Lumber Company.

He was a past Mayor of Cushing and participated in numerous civic events.

He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, playing bridge and drinking coffee with his friends. As a Church and community leader, his kindness and generosity was well known.

He is survived by daughter, Christine Hughes Gunter and her husband Jerry of Dallas, TX; one brother T.J. Hughes of Tulsa; two grandchildren, Alan and Claire Gunter of Dallas, several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son Hugh Hughes, II and one daughter Elizabeth Hughes.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 10 A.M. in the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Tom Stewart officiating.

Serving as casket bearers will be Bill Ahrberg, Jr., Paul Magdeburg, John Bryant, Lionel Harris, Steve Crowder, John Fechner, Bob Jones and Alan Gunter.

Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.
