The cemetery is said to have been established in 1890. The town of Clayton began its decline in 1900 when the railroad was laid on the east side of the Cimarron River and the town of Ripley was formed. The town of Clayton was just north of the cemetery. It's legal description is NW-SW-24-18N-3E in Clayton Twp. It is 1 and 3/4 miles south of the townsite of Mehan.
This cemetery is divided into a black section (on the south) and the white section (on the north). The black section was long referred to as the Clayton Colored Cemetery. Many residents of the "Morehead Plantation", a 700+ acre cotton enterprise about 1.5 miles to the south, were buried in the black cemetery.
