Witcher Cemetery
aka Moore, Poage and Piper Cemetery

NW 1/4, Sec. 19, T13N, R2W, I.M.

Survey © by: Robert Farrar

Witcher Cemetery is located on NE 122nd St., 0.5 mile west of N. Coltrane Rd., in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From the Oklahoma City area, take I-35 north to NE 122nd St. {exit 137}. Turn left {west} on to NE 122nd St. and go about 1.2 miles. The cemetery is on the left {south} side of the road.

According to an article in the January 23, 1891 Edmond Sun, J. W. Moore announced that he was giving the NW portion of his claim {Sec 19-T13N-R2W} in Witcher for use as a cemetery. He stated that the cemetery would be free to all who wish to use it. An heir of J. W. Moore must have signed the deed because 2.5 acres was given by warranty deed, dated April 15, 1899, by W. F. and Mattie M. Moore of Wright County, Missouri to the trustees of the Moore Cemetery of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Territory for the sum of $100.00. George Moore {1854-1926} and Emma Moore {1858-1917}, possible relatives, are buried in the cemetery. For a short period of time, the cemetery was known as the Piper Cemetery. Early records indicate that a Nancy Jane Piper and children lived in Witcher. However, there is no documentation of the Piper surname in Witcher cemetery records. A woman who grew up in the area remembered a bachelor named John Piper who died around 1920 and was buried there. No stone shows his name. She also said that the Pipers lived on one side of the cemetery and the Poages on the other. This would explain the aka Moore-Poages-Piper Cemeteries. Buried there are David S. Poage {1854-1930} and Mary Francis Poage {1861-1948}. Eventually, the name was changed to Witcher Cemetery. The town of Witcher existed from July 31, 1903 to May 31, 1914 and was named after Daniel J. Witcher. There is a Myrtle F. Witcher {1879-1951} buried here.

The cemetery was canvassed in 1963 and listed 83 surnames. There are a number of graves in the cemetery that are unmarked or are marked only by stones that are now unreadable. It was canvassed again in May 2005 and there are only 69 readable markers and 8 stones that are now blank. The cemetery is still in use, the latest burial was in September 2019. {Most information obtained from OK County Cemetery Index - compiled by OK County HCE Genealogy Group, page 137.}
