Troy D. Hackney, age 79 of Purcell, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Troy was born July 22, 1933 near Lindsay, OK, known as the Fairview community. He was a twin to Roy and 1 of 15 children; 10 born to Barney Hackney and Emily (Jones) Hackney; 3 born to Barney Hackney and Marie (Stevens Horath) Hackney; and 2 born to Marie (Stevens Horath) Hackney. Troy grew up near Dibble and attended both Dibble and Iron Chapel Schools. He married the love of his life; a young lady named Wanda Louise Simms, on April 6, 1956, in Gainesville, TX. To this union, a son, Troy Dean, and a daughter, Debra Shirlene, were born. As a young boy, Troy began losing his eye sight. At 27 years of age, he became legally blind. Through this experience, he remained optimistic and even more determined to be an example for others. He began working in the oilfield for Rainbow Services of Lindsay, OK and also worked as a mechanic before going to work at Food Service Canteen Centers with the Oklahoma League for the Blind Association. Troy worked at the VA Centers in Talihina, Pauls Valley, and the Oklahoma City FAA, before retiring after more than 20 years at the Norman VA Center. Troy loved music, especially that of his children when they sang in church. Troy always wanted to learn to play the banjo, which he did. Troy was a man that always had to stay busy, whether it be mechanicing, carpentry, electrical, it just didn’t matter as long as he was busy at something. He loved tinkering on small engines and tractors and loved for people to call and request his help. Troy was a family man first. He cherished his wife and kids, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a longtime member and Deacon of the Iron Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Troy was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed!
