Lewis Bond Morrow, Jr.

Born: November 04, 1924
Died: March 06, 2010

Lewis Bond Morrow, Jr., 85, long-time resident of Guthrie, OK, entered into eternal life on March 6, 2010 after a long illness.

Lewis was born November 4, 1924 in Memphis, TN to Lewis Bond and Mildred Banks Morrow, Sr.

In his formative years, Lewis attended the Foreman School in Litchfield, CT with summers at the family summer home in Charlevoix, MI. He then attended Hernando High School, Hernando, MS where he graduated in 1944. He then entered military service with the American Field Service and was trained as an ambulance driver in Hyderabad, India, with the British Army, to be part of the first assault group in the invasion of Singapore, but was garrisoned in Karachi, India (now Pakistan) instead, with the conclusion of World War II.

Upon returning to Memphis in 1946, Lewis enrolled at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford, MS, majoring in Abnormal Psychology and pledging to the Kappa Alpha fraternity. After receiving his degree in 1950, he came to Norman, OK to attend the University of Oklahoma in anticipation of expanding the family business, Oklahoma Furniture Manufacturing Company, in Guthrie, OK, into Oil and Gas Exploration in the region. It was in Oklahoma City that he had a blind date with Susie Maurine Poplin. That date was the beginning of a friendship that grew into love, and they were married on May 28, 1954 in Danville, AR at the home of Sue’s parents, Horace and Rosetta Poplin. Sue’s two children, Micah and Evelynn, attended also, and the family moved to Guthrie, OK where Lewis took a job at Oklahoma Furniture and worked there until his retirement in 1980. Lewis was also a part owner of the family farming operation, Banks and Company, in Hernando, MS. He later started a land development venture in Hernando, MS that continues today.

Lewis was a member of and involved with many international, national, state, and local charities and organizations; including the Guthrie Lions Club, Guthrie, OK and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis, TN.

He enjoyed a keen interest in stamp and coin collecting, photography, short-wave radio listening, and reading. He had an extraordinary knowledge of medical procedures and medicine which he was very proud of sharing with friends and family.

Lewis is survived by his sister Minor LeBlond and her husband Daniel of Ohio; a brother Don Morrow of Santa Fe, NM: and four children Micah of Edmond, OK, Evelynn Mackie and her husband Keith of Allen, TX, Phillip and his wife Jennifer of Guthrie, OK, and Georgeanna McCombie and her husband Patrick of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lewis was assisted in his final years of life by his personal assistant and very close friend, Bruce Hall. The family is extremely grateful for the friendship, support, and assistance he provided for their father during this time.

Lewis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Susie "Sue" Maurine in September 2006.
