Lamont Cemetery


John Lloyd Yeager was born in Blackwell, Okla., on Sept. 19, 1936, to Dick and Elma (Armantrout) Yeager and died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, in Enid.

The family lived briefly in Lamont and at the beginning of World War II moved to California, where his father worked in a shipyard. After the war they returned to Oklahoma. They also lived in Arkansas, Kansas and Georgia.

In January 1954 John joined the U.S. Navy and served for 25 years before retiring in February 1979. During his career in the Navy he served aboard several aircraft carriers with cruises in various parts of the world including Japan, Philippine Islands, Tonkin Gulf off Vietnam, Africa, Australia and Spain. He retired a Master Chief Petty Officer and had served serveral years as a Limited Duty Officer.

John married Velma Jane Grubb Feb. 25, 1962, in Lamont. Three children were born to this union.

The family lived in California, Texas, Washington, Okinawa and Oklahoma. After his retirement from the Navy they returned to Lamont, where they lived for 12 years before moving to Enid in 1988.

After his retirement from the Navy, John worked for the Xerox Corporation as a customer service representative for 20 years, retiring in 1999. John was a 30-plus years active member of

American Legion in both Lamont and Enid and served as State Commander of the American Legion in 2002-2003.

John is survived by his wife, Velma of the home; two daughters, Jane (Mike) Day of Stillwater and Linda (Vincent) McCool of Hunter; one son, John (Vallery) Yeager Jr. of Edmond; 10 grandchildren including spouses; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Hunter United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Littrell, assisted by Linda Pope, of Hunter United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lamont Cemetery with Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek, making arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Enid summer baseball program.
