George was the son of George and Charlotte "Lottie" Inskip Carpenter.

George married Birtie Ellen [Manning] Brown on April 10, 1912. George and Birtie had 5 known daughters--Ruth, Lela Evalena [Jackson], Charlotte, Ida Mae and Mayme. The family made their living by farming.

George's birth date varies from the July 28, 1875, date he provided on his World War I draft registration form, to the 1900 census when his birth month and year are stated as July 1878, to the 1880 census when he is reported as age 2. Then there is his age, reported as 91, in his obituary. The 1880 census date for his year of birth is used here.

Birtie Ellen [Manning] Carpenter
November 22, 1888 ~ July 13, 1973

Birtie Ellen Manning was the daughter of John Washington Manning and Matilda Ellen [Asher] Manning. Her birth month and year were informed by the 1900 census and her day of death by a family member, although her birth year on her marker indicates 1888--this information coming from either cemetery or burial records.

Birtie had many siblings. Her brothers were William Washington, and Robert A Manning. Her father remarried after the death of her mother, and Birtie's half-siblings were Charles Franklin, Cora F., John Clifford, Alta M, Zella Ann, and Lewis Jeffers Manning.

Birtie married first Henry Brown December 25, 1904, in Noel, Missouri. After his death in the Osawatomie hospital on January 24, 1912, she married second George Carpenter, April 10, 1912.

The second marriage may have been relatively soon after the death of Henry, however, she had been struggling with her family of daughters just to make ends meet, as her husband was absent from the household from 1910 until his death.

Mattie Carpenter
April 9, 1895 ~ November 18, 1910

SAD DEATH OF HIGH SCHOOL GIRL

Mattie Carpenter, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Carpenter, passes Away Friday Afternoon After a Brief Illness

[Written by a friend of the family]

The Grim Reaper has again visited this community this time to claim the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Carpenter who reside one mile southeast of this city.

Mattie Carpenter was born in Hawkins county, Tenn. April 9, 1895, and passed from this life Friday November 18, 1910. All that human aid could do to bring her back to health again was done but alas, twas all in vain.

Mattie up to the time of her fatal illness was attending the high school at this place, she stood well in all her studies and was loved by all who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church by the Rev. P. F. Harman who delivered a very approp[r]iate and touching sermon.

The pupils of the school under the leadership of Prof. Shepard marched in a body from the church to the cemetery where they paid their last respects to their departed school mate.

She leaves to mourn her loss a father and mother, two brothers and two sisters.

Words of kindness and sympathy for the bereaved ones were heard on every hand, but nothing but time alone can bind up the wounded and bleeding hearts of those who loved her so dearly.

She has gone but not forgotten
She has crossed the great divide,
To dwell in that great White City
With the one that was Crucified.

And up in that great White City
No sorrow will come to her there.
She's waiting and watching for loved ones,
To come over where all is so fair.
