Mattie L. [Simmons] Smith
January 15, 1938 ~ March 24, 2009


Funeral services for Mattie Smith, 71, of Chickasha, will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 27, 2009, in the Grand Assembly of God Church with Larry Hatfield officiating.

Mattie [Simmons] Smith was born January 15, 1938, in Marlow, Oklahoma, the daughter of Jed and Leona [Spears] Simmons. She died March 24, 2009, in Chickasha.

She grew up in Hollis, Oklahoma and graduated from Hollis High School.

Mattie married the love of her life, Lionel Smith, on May 2, 1953, in Hollis. They have had 55 wonderful years together.

They moved to California, where they lived in Napa and Fairfield before returning to Oklahoma in 1970. They bought a farm near Chickasha where they farmed and raised cattle until 1986 when they moved into town.

Mattie was a Bible Scholar. She was in the middle of writing a book on the study of the Holy Spirit. She was a devout Christian and dedicated her life to God. She was an active member of the Grand Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by both parents; brother, Herman Simmons; sister, Bernice White; two infant daughters: Diane Smith and Catherine Smith.

She leaves behind her husband, Lionel, of the home; two daughters and son-in-law: Shirley and Lance Bennett, of Blanchard and Phyllis Hawkins, of Lawton; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Max and Louise Simmons, Clifford and Sharon Simmons and Charles and Dana Simmons, all of Cement; sister, Ruby Andrado, of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren: Derick and Tiffany Hawkins and Brook and Shana Bennett; many nieces nephews and extended family.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
