Everett Ray Buchanan Sr
April 10, 1930 ~ May 18, 2009


Funeral services for Everett R. Buchanan Sr., 79, of Chickasha will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 23, 2009, in the New Life Christian Church.

Everett R. Buchanan Sr. was born April 10, 1930, in Cloud Chief, Oklahoma, the son of James Andrew and Ollie Dicey [Bales] Buchanan.

He died May 18, 2009, in Chickasha.

He grew up on farms in Cowden, Alfalfa and Carnegie, Oklahoma.

After high school, Everett joined the U.S. Army, where he served for 2 years. He then returned to Oklahoma and went to work in Oklahoma City.

Everett married the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Shirley Ann [Cosgrove] Buchanan, on April 30, 1953, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This union blessed them with 9 children.

Everett and Shirley lived in Alaska from 1959 to 1962. They had also resided in Sulpher and Okmulgee before moving to Chickasha in 1977.

After coming to Chickasha, Everett started his own refrigeration business. He retired in 1988, but due to the enjoyment of the job, he would still go out on calls on occasion. Everett loved working with his son in the family business. He enjoyed interacting with the public and meeting people. He was a stay busy kind of man. He was always building or re-modeling something.

He also enjoyed doing volunteer work and he was an avid volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Family was Everett's top priority and he enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren.

One of Everett's proudest accomplishments was his participation in TOPS (Taking Pounds Off Sensibly), where he was the "King of Tops" in 2002.

He was preceded in death by both parents; twins sons: Ronald and Donald; two brothers: Bailey and Sam Buchanan; two sisters: Catherine Smith and Ella Mae Clark; and a son-in-law: Robert Kalkbrenner Jr.

He leaves behind his wife, Shirley, of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law: Barbara Gillenwater, of Chickasha, Pamela Walls, of Welston, Oklahoma, Vicki Kalkbrenner, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, Cheryl and Danny Fales, of Rush Springs, Oklahoma, and Sharron and Randy Sursa, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sons and daughter-in-law: Everett Buchanan Jr. and Darrell and Linda Buchanan, all of Chickasha; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; four sisters and their families: Rose Rhoads, Helen Turney, Peggy Christian and Mary Dodson; and much extended family.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
