Fargo Cemetery
aka Fairmount

Fargo, Ellis County, OK

LOCATION: 1/2 Mile south of the town of Fargo
SEC-23 TWP-22 R-23
Map.

Stella Bailey, 9 year old daughter of G. W. and Ella Bailey died in 1899. This is the oldest death date in the cemetery.

First recorded burial was Otis L. Fenimore, son of Lee Roy and Sylvia E. Nee:Gilbert Fenimore in 1905.

Fargo was known as Whitehead between 1886 and 1893. The railroad depot was established, and the settlement of "Whitehead" was official on April 22, 1889.

The townsite investment company was developed and in 1901 the town was properly surveyed and platted. Whitehead was officially named Oleta in 1902. The Government changed the name to Fargo on February 17, 1905. The land around the cemetery in 1910 belonged to the Fargo Town and Investment Company. The cemetery was platted about 1901.

The Masonic Charity Lodge NO. 254 was in charge of the Fairmount Cemetery and it's records for a number of years.

The cemetery is now owned by the Fargo Cemetery Association.

The Steven Ingle Flagpole Monument was placed because the Ingle family donated two acres of new cemetery land (North section) to the association. A third addition is being proposed.

The late Lois Hohweiler was the secretary of this cemetery. Mrs. Roma Lochmann is now the secretary. Floyd Steinert is the President of the association. Roma has worked very hard to recheck all the cemetery records and headstones at the cemetery to make sure that all available information is recorded.

NOTE: Burials in Woodward County The Tangier and File farm cemeteries have been used by Fargo residents in the past. The Gnaudenfeld Cemetery is still used.
