Eleanor Alice Simpson Hawthorne

Birth date: April 19, 1931
Death date: December 23, 2014

Eleanor Alice Hawthorne, Lawton, was born April 19, 1931 in Vass, North Carolina to Julius and Freda [Gshwind] Simpson. She died peacefully at a local hospital on December 23, 2014, at the age of 83.

Eleanor grew up in North Carolina on her family's tobacco farm. She learned at an early age the importance of hard work and family values. Eleanor was a true southern belle.

She met and married George I. Hawthorne in 1950 at Ft. Bragg, NC. She and SGM Hawthorne were married for over 46 years where she nursed him at home until his death in 1996.

Eleanor was a devoted military wife and loved her family. She passed on her love of reading, having an open mind, acceptance of all people, and a strong faith in God to her children. Eleanor also had many friends with whom she loved spending time with, including a group of friends known as the Thursday Lunch Ladies.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she once obtained the title of Woman of the Year.

With her easy laugh, warm smile, hilarious sense of humor, love of cooking, extensive knowledge of gardening and perpetual green thumb, she will be missed by many. Eleanor had an ability to put people at ease almost immediately whether she knew them or not. Her genuine love and caring curiosity for others quickly made loyal friends out of strangers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George; sons, Monte Keith Hawthorne and George Edward Hawthorne; granddaughter, Ann Elizabeth Wyant; a brother, Harold "Bud" Simpson, and a sister Betty Ann Simpson.

Survivors include her daughters, Tammy D. Hawthorne, of the home and Dianne J. Lang of Bluffton, SC; grandchildren: Allison Camille Hawthorne Wyant, Tara Marissa Sanger, Lindsay Diane Hawthorne, Jenny Lynne Hawthorne, Donetta Sue Bragg, David DeWayne Parson and Robin Eugene Parson; sisters, Cathy Simpson, Margaret Bailey, Leatrice Beasley and Dorothy Stewart; brother, Larry Simpson; a cherished family friend of many years, Sieglinde H. Elliott and numerous great-grandchildren, extended family members and friends. Visitation:
