Francis Darrell Pope

December 29, 1936 - August 21, 2019

Graveside service for 1SG (Ret) Francis Darrell Pope will be 2:30 PM, Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Post Cemetery in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma under the direction of Whinery Huddleston Funeral Service.
Francis Darrell Pope was born December 29, 1936 in Hartford, Illinois to Francis R. Pope and Grace Brown. Pope, as his friends referred to him, was a highly decorated Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. 1SG (Ret) Pope entered into military service April 22, 1953 in Hartford, Ill. He originally served as a Supply Clerk before transferring to the Field Artillery. His awards include the Silver Star for Gallantry, Bronze Star for ground operations against hostile forces, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm device, Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Army Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), Presidential Unit Citation, and Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm device and the Parachutist Badge. ISG (Ret) Pope was also a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5263 where he spent most days reminiscing with Army buddies and mentoring younger Veterans. The VFW became his family after the passing of his wife, Linda in 2017.
1SG (Ret) Francis Darrell Pope at 82 years, 7 months and 23 days, passed away August 21, 2019.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Francis R. Pope and Grace C. Brown; his wife, Linda Pope; and 2 sisters, Dolores Rowell (James) and Glendean Rousan (Gene). Pope is survived by his nephew Brian D. Rousan of Arnold, Mo; his niece, Renee L (Rowell Malone of Wheatfield, IN; 4 great nephews and nieces and 4 great-great nephews and nieces.
1SG (Ret) Pope, from your Comrades and family at the VFW, your mission is complete. You stand relieved of your duties. Rest in Peace Soldier! Thank you for your Service...
