Funeral service for Herman Leslie Barnett, 93, former Lawton resident will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, in the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel.

On March 20, 2014 after many years of service as minister and Elder at various congregations of the Church of Christ, as an educator and a loving husband, father, granddad, and great-granddad, Herman exchanged his place of residency, which he shared with Jeroldine his wife of 62 years, from Cedar Park, Texas to his life long goal, his eternal home in Heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Burial with Navy honors will be in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.

Herman was born on January 14th, 1921 on the family farm northwest of Woodward, OK. to Delbert Odell and Zella Mae Covalt Barnett. He grew up on the family farm attending Senate rural schools.

It was during a gospel meeting at County Line Church of Christ in the fall of 1933 conducted by Roy Ruckman the regular preacher for the Woodward Church of Christ that he was baptized.

He graduated from Fort Supply High School at the age of 16 in 1937. In 1939 he attended Junior College in Woodward Oklahoma.

When his Selective Service number came up he enlisted in the US Naval Reserve and was assigned to the 52nd Naval Construction Battalion. The Seabees were stationed in the Aleutian Islands. In 1945 he was sent to Midshipman's school at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend Indiana where he received a commission as Ensign in the US Naval Reserve.

After serving his country in WWII, Herman began his career as a minister and educator by continuing his education at Abilene Christian College. Here he met the young lady who would become his partner for life, Jeroldine Barker.

Herman's greatest pleasure outside his family was reading. From an early age through the rest of his life he loved to read and to learn. He received his BA in Bible and a minor in English and German from ACC in 1951. After graduating from ACC, Herman and Jeroldine were united in marriage on June 3, 1951. In 1956 Herman graduated with a MA in Church History from Butler University. During the year 1959 he attended the National Defense Act Institute in Foreign Languages at the University of Colorado. Herman also received his MA in Spanish and German from Emporia State College in 1965. Herman taught languages at Lakin High School for seven years. The family then moved to York Nebraska where Herman taught languages and Bible classes for 16 year at York Christian College. Herman spent a summer with his family in Saltillo, Mexico attending a Spanish University. Other summers he studied the Hebrew and Russian Languages,

Preceding him in death were his parents. Three brothers Raymond Barnett and wife Marie, Arnold Barnett, J.D Barnett, brother-in-law and close friend, Rant D. Edwards.

He is survived by his wife Jeroldine, sister Velma Genevieve Edwards, and sister-in-law Beverly Barnett, children Delbert Barnett and wife Melinda, Debra Sexton and husband Rick, DeAnna Martin and husband David, Dale Barnett and wife Joanna, grandchildren Shannon Sexton, Josh Sexton and wife Abbi, Michael Sexton and wife Tessa, Stacey Sexton Wilson and husband Matt, Stephen Sexton and wife Lupe, Blake Barnett, Megan Barnett Jones, Tyler Martin, Audrey Barnett, and Jake Barnett, four great grandson's, Paxton Jones, Trenton Sexton, Corbin and Cooper Wilson, along with several nieces and nephews.
