Long-time Norman resident Janice (Jan) Campbell Carpenter , 85, affectionately known as ‘Soupy’, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 after a recurrence of cancer.  She died peacefully surrounded by the warmth of her four loving children and devoted husband. 

She was born July 2, 1927 in Hartford, CT to John Welch Campbell and Bertha Roby Campbell.  She was graduated from Tufts University in Somerville, MA in 1949.  Jan married Ensign Earl Chester Carpenter on August 13, 1949 at St. Mary’s Church in Newington, CT. 

Jan was a beloved math teacher at West Junior High School and Norman High School for 20 years before her retirement.  She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Norman.

Jan was a devoted and generous wife, mother, and grandmother.  She lived life to the fullest with a strong and positive outlook, traveling the world with four children as she followed her husband to his various duty stations with the U.S. Navy.  She was a warm presence to all who knew her and enjoyed water aerobics, regular bridge games, traveling with family, and Episcopal Church activities, serving as Chair of Pastoral Care Committee, a Bible Study Leader and on the vestry.

Survivors include her husband Earl; son John Howard Carpenter and wife Cassandra Petre Carpenter of Washington, DC; son Paul Campbell Carpenter and wife Rebecca Sue Carpenter of Norman; daughter Jeanne Ann Fell of Norman; and daughter Elizabeth Dakin Burns and husband James Edward Burns of Wayland, MA.  Grandchildren include Latham Edward Fell and wife Kindle Clark Fell, and great-granddaughter Aiana of Falls Church, VA; Peter Carpenter Fell and wife Katherine Miller Fell, and great-granddaughters Eliana and Annalise of Clarksville, TN; Andrew Thomas Fell and Linsie Eriksen Fell of Shawnee, KS; Kara-Anne Cassett Pantalena and Anthony Jack Pantalena of Arlington, VA; Kathleen Campbell Burns of Wayland, MA; Angela Sue Bullington and husband Jay Bullington, and great-grandchildren Brandon and Brittany of Spring, TX; and grandson Robert Paul Grider and fiancée Laura Anderson of Oklahoma City, OK; and granddaughter Elizabeth Deal of Midwest City; and great-grandchildren Grant and Grace Schallhorn of Oklahoma City.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 235 West Duffy, Norman, OK 73069.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2012 at St. John's Episcopal Church.  Arrangements for Jan and her family have been placed in the care of the Vice Family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
