(permission granted)

John Sweeney Jr., age 68 of Lexington, passed away Monday, February 17, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City. John Michael Sweeney Jr. was born October 20, 1945 in Fairmont, WV, the younger of 2 children born to John Michael Sweeney Sr. and Louise Loraine (Welling) Sweeney. He was raised primarily in West Virginia before moving to Arizona during his high school years, graduating from Alhambra High School. John took fashion tips from no one. His signature every day look was all his: a plain pocketed T-shirt designed by the fashion house Fruit of the Loom, his Levi blue jeans, slightly sagging before it was cool, sold exclusively at Wal-Mart. Many knew of his life-long love affair with Dr. Pepper and Reese’s peanut butter cups as well as his wife, Jean Elizabeth (Tyler) Sweeney of 47 years. John proudly served his country as an enlisted man in the United States Army. Upon completing his duty in Vietnam he returned home to Phoenix, AZ to raise two sons, Johnny and Eddie. John was a wonderful husband and father. As an over the road trucker, he drove over a million miles through the years to provide for his family. In his later years, he learned to cherish time with his grandbabies. John was of the Catholic faith. He was an honest man, a friend to everyone he met, and he will be dearly missed!

He was preceded in death by: His parents, John Sr. and Louis Sweeney.

John leaves behind: His wife, Jean, of the home; His sons, John Sweeney III and wife Sheri of Purcell and Edwin Sweeney and wife Trisha of Newalla; His sister, Margaret Bonnette of El Mirage, AZ; 6 grandchildren, Kyle, Kaitlynn, Allyson, Cody, Jarrett and Tyler; 1 great grandson, Bryson and a host of other family and good friends.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Chappel Hill Cemetery near Lexington.
