Charles W. “Skip” Barnard, age 81, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 in Norman, Oklahoma. 

He was born February 4, 1930 in Franklin, Oklahoma to Virgil Lee and Hattie Gertrude (Talbot) Barnard.  He was united in marriage to Naomi Watkins on October 25, 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Skip received an honorable discharge in 1947 for his service in Korea in the United States Army and an honorable discharge for the Air National Guard in 1953 and was a recipient of a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.  Skip attended Oklahoma Central University graduating with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.  His career began with Grebb Company which had offices in Canada and Wichita, Kansas.  Skip continued in research and development for the FAA retiring in 1968.  He continued working in research department at the University of Oklahoma and later retired.  He was a lifetime member of DAV. 

Skip enjoyed working in his garden growing vegetables and tomatoes, fishing, and taking family trips.  Some of his favorite trips were to Las Vegas, Canada Yellowstone Park, and Lake Texoma.   Skip was a lifetime Democrat, avid OU fan, dedicated  reader, and big history buff.  He will be remembered for his generosity and his love for family.  Skip was a faithful contributor to the St. Jude organization. 

Skip is survived by his former wife, Naomi Watkins Barnard; daughter, Cindi Barnard of Norman; brother, D.R. Barnard and his wife Mary Ann of Norman; sister-in-law, Joy Bell Barnard of Norman; and grandchildren, Cole Barnard of Norman, Alex Barnard of Oklahoma City, Jessica Barnard  and Jillian Barnard both of Gilbert, Arizona. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, an infant brother; Mildred Patterson, Kenneth Barnard, Lucille Cass, and Betty A. Baily; and son, Danny Lee Barnard.

Contributions may be made in memory of Charles W. Barnard to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.  The family wishes to thank S. Darbe, M.D.

Family will be receiving friends, 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street, Norman.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Blackburn Cemetery, 84th and Franklin Road, Norman, Oklahoma.  Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
