© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, June 6, 1923 Homer Arthur Smith 1899 ~ May 23, 1923 Boone Boy Meets Death From Lightning Stroke Arthur Smith, 23 years old was struck by lightning and almost instantly killed Wednesday about noon, during what appeared to be a small electrical storm in the Boone Community. The death dealing bolt of fire struck the unfortunate youth on the left side of the neck and burned a streak exactly over the heart and continued down the left side tearing off his shoe. Aid reached the stricken man soon after the accident but death was almost instantaneous. Young Smith, with two brothers, had just returned from a fishing trip and all were resting on a watering trough in the yard. Arthur remarked that he was going to the house, as he was afraid of being struck by lighting. He had gone but a few steps when the bolt struck him. Staggering forward a short distance, he fell prostrate on the ground and expired shortly afterward. His heart was still beating when relatives reached his side, but all efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful. Arthur was the son of T.F. Smith, and has resided in the Boone neighborhood for several years. He was a quiet, industrious young fellow and was loved and respected by a wide host of friends. He leaves a father, a sister and several brothers to mourn his untimely death.--Apache Review. |
