MARIE ALICE (Vóóhéhévá'e Morning Star Woman) WHITEBIRD-WHITEMAN
(Vétapahaeto’é’e Kiowa woman)

Marie Alice Whitebird-Whiteman was born September 1, 1934, in Watonga, Oklahoma to Mollie Curtis and Dawes Whitebird. She attended Chilacco Indian School and received her diploma from Watonga High School in 1953. Her 31-year nursing career ended in 1989 when the Blaine County Health Department was established. Her career with Opportunities Inc. began in 1990; then retired in 2003. She was very active with the Watonga Hospital Auxiliary and was serving as treasurer up until her sickness took a hold. She received many awards and special recognition throughout her life being honored and humbled by each one. Marie was the last of the original Lightning Clan members. She also held numerous princess titles and most notably representing the Cheyenne in 1951 at the American Indian Exposition in Anadarko, Ok. She was a member and devout believer in our Native American Church Ways and Cheyenne Ceremonies.

Granny, as lovingly called by her family had 2 brothers, Lavern Whitebird and Charles Whitebird, preceding her in death, has 7 kids: Wilma Cedartree-Horse (deceased), daughter and grandkids; Beverly Jimenez, husband, kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids of Moore, Ok; Karen Daratt, kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids of Oklahoma City; Charles Howlingwater, wife, kids, and grandkids of Thomas, Ok; Lavada Gould (deceased), kids, and grandkids; Leatrice Gonzalez, partner, kids, and grandkids of Watonga, Ok; Janell Howlingwater (deceased); and 3 adopted sons; Creg Hart, spouse, and kids of Thomas, Ok; Chester Whiteman, wife, kids, and grandkids of Geary, Ok; Stewart Candy (deceased) of Hammon, Ok.

Wake services will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at the Watonga Emergency Response Center from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 24, 2024 at 10:00 A.M. at the Emergency Response Center in Watonga, Oklahoma, burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga with Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga in charge of arrangements.
