George Andrew Schenk Jr.

Dec. 10, 1918 ~ Feb. 19, 2009

The graveside service for George Andrew Schenk Jr., 90, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, in I.O.O.F Cemetery, Watonga. The Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Arrangements are by Wilkinson Mortuary, Watonga.

He was born Dec. 10, 1918, near Hitchcock to George Andrew Sr. and Bessie Schaffler Schenk and died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, following a lengthy illness. He graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1937.

He was inducted into the Army July 13, 1943, serving during World War II. He served in the European Theatre of War in 1943, returning to the United States in 1946 where he was honorably discharged at Camp Chaffee, Ark.

After serving in England, France and Germany he retured to the Watonga are where he farmed and ranched, retiring in 1983. He also worked 10 years for Pioneer Telephone and 10 years as manager of the Watonga Housing Authority.

He married Zelma Lois Hollingsworth May 10, 1947. They made their home in Watonga.

He was a former member of Hitchcock Methodist Church and Watonga Christian Church, serving as elder, deacon, chairman and treasurer of the church board, Sunday school secretary, chaired various committees, choir member and a member of the Men’s Quartet. He was a 62-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in addition to the 81st Air Force Historical Society. He was inducted into the Blaine County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2001.

Surviving are his wife, Zelma; one daughter, Holly Ann Schenk Ransom; and two granddaughters.
