The funeral for George E. Hicks, 86, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2010, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Eric Keller will officiate. A graveside committal service will be 2 p.m. in Eagle City Cemetery, Eagle City.

He was born June 27, 1923, west of Geary to John and Martha Nicolai Hicks and died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, in Enid.

He attended Hopewell School and Greenfield High School. He enlisted in the Navy Jan. 27, 1943. He was stationed at Corona Naval Hospital, San Francisco, Brisbane and Townsend, Australia, Hollandy, New Guinea, Hawaii, and Yokahoma, Japan. He transferred into the Marines and was stationed in Peiping and Seingtow, China, before returning to Corona Naval Hospital.

He married Barbara Nell Phillips April 26, 1947, in Eagle City. They made their home in Canton. He was discharged on Jan. 26, 1949, from the Navy.

He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1953. He worked for Reda Pump in McPherson, Kan., and later in Kermit, Texas. They made their home in Odessa, Texas, where he worked for General Tire and Rubber Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1985. They moved to Enid in 1991.

He was a member of the Christian Church for many years, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. He was a member of Oakwood Christian Church at the time of his death. He also was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of the home; two sons, Bill Hicks of Houston and Bob Hicks of Tulsa; two sisters, Ella Mae Byrd of Quartzite, Ariz., and Dorotha Storia of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Oakwood Christian Church or Hospice Circle of Love.
