Monte Rick Russell (Cheyenne Name: Kó'ana or Coins), 56 year old resident of El Reno, OK, passed from this life on June 8, 2018 at the age of 56. Monte was born on May 22, 1962 to Harvey Sr. and Frances (Nibbs) Russell in Clinton, OK. He attended school until the 8thgrade when he left to seek his fortunes. Monte had two sons, Wendell Russell and Roy Star.

Monte was an active performer of the War Dance, performing it at the State Fair, Frontier City, Pow Wows, Rodeos, and Cheyenne Ceremonies. Monte was a member of the Bowstring Society.

Monte is preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Frances Russell; brother, LaValle Russell; and brother-in-law Leroy Elwood Chouteau.

Monte is survived by sons Wendell Russell and Roy Star; grandchildren Aliyah Star, Steven Lee Russell, and Happy Annalise Russell; sister Patricia Mousetrail Russell, brother Harvey Russell Jr., sister Leanna Mousetrail Russell and husband Danny Moses Sr., brother Cliff Mousetrail Russell and wife Dana, sister Cheryl and husband Virgil Quick, brother Matthew Mousetrail Russell and wife Ruthie, sister Mona Tina Wright, sister Millie Sue Russell, and sister Marcella Russell; and many more nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones.

A traditional Cheyenne wake was held Wednesday, June 13, 2018, starting at 7:00 PM at the Canton Native American Gym.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the Canton Native American Gym at 11:00 AM, with interment following at the Cantonment Reinternment Cemetery.

Services were provided by Redinger Funeral Home.
