Jim married Linda Kay Williams on Jan. 1, 1965 in Anadarko, OK. In 1966, he was drafted by the US Army and served 2 years during the Vietnam War, earning a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class Unit Citation Badge. He was a retired federal contracting inspector from the Army Ammunition Plant in McAlester, OK. Previously he taught Auto-Diesel Mechanics at Kiamichi, Area Vo-Tech in McAlester, OK. Due to illness he and Linda moved to Elk City, OK from Indianola, OK in June 2016. He was a member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church in Indianola, OK and loved his church family more than they will ever know - even Marilyn. Besides his family and friends, his heart belonged to hunting, fishing and horses. He saved his annual leave every year and took off the last two months of every year to devote to deer hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents; LJ and Juanita Whaley.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, of the home; one 4-legged daughter, Holly, of the home, one human daughter, Jennifer Zachary and husband, Nick of Sayre, OK; sister, Louise Haas and husband, Glenn of Fort Cobb, OK; brother, Jerry Whaley and wife Sandra of Fort Cobb, OK; brother Garry Whaley wife Dian of Round Rock, TX; sister Nita Irvine and husband Larry of Midwest City, OK; best friend and brother James Craig and wife Cathy of Stuart, OK; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service, Elk City.
