Virginia M (Goldsmith) Atkinson

Virginia M. Atkinson was born August 5, 1934 in Highmore, South Dakota to Leona and Walter Goldsmith. She passed away June 23, 2015 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 18 days.

Virginia grew up Harlem, Montana and graduated from Harlem High School in 1952. After high school, she was married to Jack Lee Atkinson at Harlem, Montana on August 14, 1955. She later furthered her education at University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio while Jack was in Seminary. They moved to Shawnee, Bartlesville, Fairfax, Yale, Ponca City, Elk City, Ada, Midwest City, Miami and Enid following Jack as he pastored in churches. During those moves Virginia found employment in the public schools as a special education teacher. Also, during those times she also obtained two masters degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a bachelors degree in Piano Pedagogy from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. She was the oldest person in the history of Southwestern to receive a masters degree in piano performance. Virginia continued teaching piano students up until May of 2015. She was a member of Cultus Club, Retired Teachers Association, president of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association and PEO chapter DY. Virginia also enjoyed reading, baking, and teaching children.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, of the home; 4 sons, Barry Atkinson and wife, Sally, Destin, FL, Martin Atkinson and wife, Janet, Rocklin, CA, David Atkinson and wife, Tami, Elk City, OK and Jon Atkinson, Elk City, OK; 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Margaret Ann Rhoades and husband, Jack, Huntington, NC; special friend, Joanne Carpenter and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Friends Of The Library and the Western Oklahoma Family Care Center.
