Mary Ida Morton Nowlin

Last rites were held in Sayre September 6, 1950 for Mrs. Mary Ida Morton Nowlin, pioneer of western Oklahoma woman, who died at the home of a daughter on Monday, September 4, 1950 following a long illness.

Mrs. Nowlin, daughter of W. N. and Elizabeth Morton, was born June 28, 1875 at Walnut Springs, Texas, and was married to James W. Nowlin in Glenrose, Texas October 3, 1897.

She has been a member of the Methodist church since she was 16 years old, and was a charter member of the old "Yankee Front" Methodist church near Hammon.

Mr. and Mrs. Nowlin moved to western Oklahoma in 1898 from Sherman, Texas and homesteaded near Hammon where they lived many years.

In 1923 she moved to Sayre, where she has since lived.

Survivors include a son, Carl Nowlin of Hammon; two daughters, Mrs. J. D. Moad and Mrs. Maye Barker, Sayre; three brothers, W. W. Morton and Jack Morton of Sayre; and J. V. Morton of Hot Springs, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Nilwon Nowlin of Hammon; Joye Nowlin and Mrs. Leo Mitzel of Bell, California; and Mrs. Charles Wittorff of South Gate, California; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, J. C. Moad.

Rev. E. T. Cooprider officiated at the services which were held in the Scroggins Chapel, and burial was in the Sayre- Doxey cemetery.
