Iva Markley Thompson was born June 13, 1916 on the family farm near Sweetwater, Oklahoma, Roger Mills County to Nora Fowler Markley and Frank Markley. She passed away September 17, 2011 at the Sayre Memorial Hospital at the age of 95 years, 3 months, 4 days.

Iva attended Brookside School where she was a top student and avid basketball player. She married Raymond Thompson December 21, 1931 at Elk City, Oklahoma. They lived and farmed in the Sweetwater Community until the Great Depression when they traveled to California to work in the canneries. Later they moved back to Sweetwater and purchased the family farm from her parents. Raymond passed away in 1965 and Iva continued farming with the help of her son-in-law, Leroy, until her retirement.

Iva had many talents and interests. She loved to cook, quilt, crochet and garden. Iva gave many of her quilts to family members and she always loved to show them to everyone. Most of all she loved spending time with family. Her home was always open and she welcomed people in. Iva and Raymond offered their home and love to several nephews and other family members for extended periods during difficult times.

Iva, being an excellent and accomplished seamstress made pageant dresses and gowns for contestants for local and state pageants. Some of the gowns were worn in the Miss Oklahoma Pageants.

Iva always had a positive attitude and her legacy was to love and cherish memories and value her family. Her most proud possession was her two grandsons, Dale and Darren and her great grandson, Jake and her granddaughter-in-law, Sherrie.

Iva had a strong faith and was a charter member of the Sweetwater Assembly of God Church. She was a very devoted and dedicated Christian serving the Lord.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Raymond, her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Those who survive are her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Leroy Dunlap of Sayre, Oklahoma, two grandsons, Dale and wife, Sherrie of Wellington, Texas, Darren Dunlap of Stillwater, Oklahoma, one great grandson, Jake Dunlap of Wellington, Texas, who attends Southwestern Oklahoma State University; one sister-in-law, Allene Thompson of Paradise, Texas; several nieces and nephews, caregivers at Hensley Nursing Home and a host of other friends.
